Colouring at Riverside

This week residents met in the conservatory to colour in a design of their choice. At Riverside we have a huge book full of fun pictures ready and waiting to be brought to life with colour. Residents love being creative and colouring, it is without doubt a favourite relaxing activity.
Colouring as most of us are aware is sometimes the perfect escape, and residents always really engage and focus whilst participating in such an activity. Colouring is said to have a lot of therapeutic benefits, it is clear to see that residents find it a wonderful way to fully relax and switch off from other thoughts. It helps to reduce their stress levels, facilitating the brain to relax. It is scientifically proven that people with dementia feel safer and more secure when colouring, it helps to create an atmosphere of tranquillity and mindfulness.
It also helps to bring out their creativity and imagination, often taking the residents back to their childhood, recalling times when they were young and doing something similar in a carefree manner.
Colouring also helps residents to focus on the moment, directing their attention on the action of colouring; ensuring they are inside the lines and using the correct colours. It therefore helps to engage the brain and use their motor skills, the precision involved in colouring helps to enhance hand and eye coordination.
The residents who participated also enjoyed the social event, mixing with each other and enjoying sharing afternoon tea and cake. Therefore, the event not only helped residents to relax but also brought them together in a positive and mindful way.
